Noises, the new album from Ben McKelvey, acts as the bookend to Ben's college career at The New School. His senior capstone project subverts ideas surrounding nostalgia and places them in a liminal space. The music draws scathing soundscapes of stories about unavoidable realities, with a strong focus on the midwestern Methodist tradition, employing elements from worship and connecting them to secular avenues of music. Songs like “Migraine” incorporate the hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul,” other songs, such as the album's opener, “Conjure,” employ spirituality in a more abstract yet tangible way. Other highlights include the lead single, “Buzzer.” This song captures a memory from Ben’s coming of age in the Ohio woods and manipulates it into something dark, something evil, almost demonic. Something sinister is afoot with Noises. Ben’s latest album is available now wherever you get your music. Sign up for Ben’s “Letters List” to stay up to date on the latest projects from the slasher.
